The eagerly awaited Borderlands 4 has begun to reveal more about its storyline and character development, particularly focusing on the villain named the Timekeeper. According to Lin Joyce, the managing director of creative at Gearbox, the team aimed to create a sense of dread surrounding the new antagonist, contrasting the less serious tones of previous games. This new villain will be notable for being an ever-present threat without overstaying his welcome.
Sam Winkler, the narrative director, remarked, “We wanted to go back to this sense of dread about the villain of our game…” which suggests a shift from the more colorful characters seen previously, such as Handsome Jack. This change reflects a broader ambition to deepen the narrative quality of the Borderlands universe.
Gameplay will occur on a prison planet called Kairos, where the Timekeeper rules with an implanted control mechanism over the inhabitants. Players will interact with various factions, adding layers to the gameplay experience. With promises to reduce the reliance on crude humor as found in earlier installments and introduce a refined story, fans are hopeful that Borderlands 4 will strike a chord differently than its predecessors.
