Routine: The Long-Awaited Sci-Fi Horror Game Nears Completion
After a long hiatus, the indie title Routine shows signs of revival, exciting fans with recent updates on its development.
The first-person sci-fi horror game Routine is still under development and is said to be “approaching the finish line,” as reported by its creator, Lunar Software. Routine was initially announced back in 2012, with an expected launch in 2013. However, due to various challenges during development, the game was put on hold indefinitely. It wasn’t until 2022 that Lunar Software resumed work on it, in partnership with indie publisher Raw Fury.
The game made a surprising return during the Summer Game Fest 2022, showcasing a 90-second gameplay trailer that captivated sci-fi horror enthusiasts with its 1970s-inspired settings, 80s technology influences, and an atmospheric, dark aesthetic. The scanline visuals differentiated it from other major sci-fi horror titles on display at the same event, and it was during this segment that Routine announced its launch on Xbox Game Pass on the day of release.
Despite a promising comeback, silence surrounded the game for three years until Lunar Software recently provided an update via a brief post on Steam titled “Heartbeat.” This message highlighted that development is advancing smoothly, and the small team is now nearing the concluding stages. It was also noted that acclaimed composer Mick Gordon, known for his work on the Doom series, parted ways with the project last year, although the team maintains permission to use his music in the final game.
While some fans may have been disappointed by the lack of news over three years, the delay allows Routine a chance to stand out amidst the 2022 and 2023 sci-fi horror landscape, previously dominated by titles such as The Callisto Protocol and EA’s Dead Space remake. While no new release date has been provided, speculation suggests that the game could be set for a release in 2026. As industry events like Gamescom and The Game Awards approach, there’s potential for another trailer, possibly revealing a release date, and perhaps even a PlayStation version, with current plans indicating a launch exclusively on Xbox and PC.
