Cyberpunk 2077 has seen a resurgence in its player base on Steam, attributed to the recent announcement that Netflix and CD Projekt Red will produce a second season of the acclaimed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series. The inaugural season premiered in September 2022, serving as a precursor to the futuristic RPG, Cyberpunk 2077.
Despite previous affirmations from CD Projekt Red that Cyberpunk 2077 would no longer receive updates, the developer continues to surprise fans with significant patches. Initially, many believed that the 2.2 update would be the last; however, good news arrived last month with the announcement of update 2.3 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Unfortunately, this new patch has experienced a slight postponement in its release date. After an initial announcement for June 26, the studio stated it needed extra time to ensure the update meets high standards. A new release date for patch 2.3 is yet to be communicated.
Edgerunners 2 Might Be Influencing the Increased Interest
The sudden rise in Steam players is likely fueled by the announcement of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, a fresh season of the popular anime series set to return fans to the vibrant Night City. This reveal occurred during this year’s Anime Expo in Los Angeles, where CD Projekt Red had confirmed its collaboration with studio TRIGGER to deliver another engaging storyline in the franchise’s renowned setting. The studio characterized Season 2 as a “raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge.” The impact of this announcement on the player count for Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles remains uncertain, as Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo do not provide player count statistics.
Fans can likely anticipate another boost in player numbers once the upcoming patch is released, though the exact content of the patch remains a mystery. However, the studio has indicated it will be comparable in scale to Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.2 update, which added new gameplay features and enhancements.
