Samantha Béart Reflects on the Dark Past of Karlach from Baldur's Gate 3

Samantha Béart discusses the complex backstory of her character Karlach in Baldur's Gate 3, revealing her dark experiences prior to the game's events.

In a recent interview, Samantha Béart, the voice behind Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3, opened up about the character’s challenging past. Béart emphasized that many players underestimate how tough Karlach was before the story began, describing her as having been part of a horrific experience in “a kind of interplanar supermax prison.” She stated:

“I think she was a piece of work in hell.”
This insight paints Karlach as not just a hero but a survivor shaped by unimaginable circumstances, living in constant struggle and moral ambiguity in her quest for redemption. Béart highlights that the sweetness players see in Karlach is a stark contrast to her survival instinct in hell, asserting that survival often demands harsh realities that players might not initially recognize. She said, “You just think about how people behave in those very small communities. Essentially, I think you can completely change to survive.”
Despite her dark past, Karlach’s ongoing journey offers a rich narrative of second chances and personal transformation, and fans are eager to see how her storyline unfolds in future updates.
