In a Midwestern city, former GameStop shoppers are rallying around a large poster of Master Chief, which remains in place nearly a year and half after the store’s permanent closure. While GameStop has been closing numerous locations, this tribute stands out for the community.
At its height in 2015, GameStop had close to 6,700 stores worldwide. Since then, it has drastically reduced its number of outlets, barely remaining above half the count from ten years back.
Despite the ongoing shifts towards digital gaming, a local image shared on Facebook illustrates how the iconic Master Chief poster, once representing the game store’s vibrance, continues to be a source of comfort for residents. Many locals have expressed their intent to visit the site, donning costumes to pay homage.
The former GameStop at Lincoln Way and Grand Avenue in Ames, Iowa, ceased operations on January 18, 2024, without revealing why. The poster has become a symbol for many, with a mix of nostalgia and hope as the gaming company explores alternative revenue streams amidst its struggles.
