Hope Remains for the Return of Banjo-Kazooie

The iconic bear and bird duo could be making a comeback as fans continue to express their interest in a new game.

No new Banjo-Kazooie game has released since Nuts & Bolts in 2008, but fans are hopeful for a revival. Rare achieved great success with the first two Banjo-Kazooie titles on Nintendo 64, leading to spin-offs and the sequel Nuts & Bolts, as well as their cameo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

While Nuts & Bolts has its supporters, many do not see it as a true sequel to the beloved series. Loyal fans are eagerly awaiting the return of the bear and bird duo on modern consoles, but as of 2025, such a game has not materialized. Although there have been persistent rumors about a new Banjo-Kazooie project, none have turned into reality. The latest reports suggest that a supposed revival has been canceled amid layoffs at Microsoft, but there still may be a glimmer of hope for the franchise’s future.

In a recent podcast, Andy Robinson of VGC indicated that while Rare is hesitant to develop a new Banjo-Kazooie title, proposals from studios like Toys for Bob and Moon Studios have been heard. There is also interest in potentially adapting the franchise into other formats such as films or television, offering fans a chance to see their favorite duo even if a new game never comes to fruition.
