Steam Hardware Survey Reveals Storage Challenges for Gamers

The latest findings from the Steam Hardware Survey highlight ongoing storage issues faced by gamers, including limited free hard drive space.

Space Management Needed

The recent Steam Hardware Survey for June 2025 underscores a consistent concern among gamers: the lack of free storage on their systems. With many gamers only reporting limited amounts of storage available, it’s a shared challenge that many, including the author, are facing.

In the survey, the most reported free space category was between 100 GB to 249 GB, that accounted for 23.05% of respondents. Following that, 22.43% noted having 250 GB to 499 GB, and only 15.66% reported managing with between 10 GB to 99 GB.

This recurring issue has led to the acknowledgment that many gamers need to declutter their systems and possibly reconsider retaining titles that are rarely played. The survey also indicates that while 52.12% of gamers have more than 1 TB of storage, many still find themselves short on free space.

One notable observation is that even with substantial overall storage, free space remains tight, often due to large games occupying significant amounts. Notably, games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Black Myth: Wukong command huge portions of storage, often exceeding 400 GB combined.

As the survey data continues to highlight these trends, it may be time for gamers to reassess their libraries and reclaim some digital elbow room.
