Leslie Benzies Plans to Revive MindsEye Following Poor Release

Leslie Benzies, former president of Rockstar Games, has indicated that Build a Rocket Boy will relaunch their new game MindsEye after a rocky introduction.

Former Rockstar Games president and Grand Theft Auto producer Leslie Benzies has purportedly informed Build a Rocket Boy staff that they will ‘relaunch’ MindsEye after its disappointing release last month. Having left Rockstar in 2016, Benzies established Build a Rocket Boy in 2018, which launched its initial title, MindsEye on June 10. Unfortunately, the game’s debut received significantly adverse reviews from both players and critics.

Fans of Grand Theft Auto closely monitored Build a Rocket Boy following Benzies’ exit from Rockstar, but the studio’s inaugural game failed to meet expectations, as MindsEye quickly became the worst-reviewed game of the year. MindsEye holds the lowest Metacritic score for any game released in 2025 so far, with critics rating it 38 out of 100, and user reviews giving it 2.5 out of 10 due to issues such as bugs, glitches, and overall performance problems. Players on PlayStation 5 Pro encountered difficulties maintaining a steady 30 FPS.

The launch of MindsEye mirrors that of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020, as the now-praised RPG was initially released in such a flawed state that it was temporarily removed from the PlayStation Store. CD Projekt Red worked diligently to regain fans’ trust through continuous updates, and Benzies hopes to achieve a similar recovery for MindsEye. According to anonymous sources who talked to IGN, Benzies recently communicated with staff post-launch for the first time, affirming that the game will ‘bounce back’ and indeed be relaunched.

MindsEye’s future remains uncertain following recent reports of lay-offs at Build a Rocket Boy less than two weeks after the game’s launch. However, the studio boasts an ambitious post-launch roadmap that intends to introduce new missions, multiplayer options, and collaborations.

Benzies claims the game’s rocky launch resulted from both internal and external ‘saboteurs,’ but the identity of these saboteurs remains vague. Leading up to the release, early previews criticized the game as a ‘broken mess,’ but co-CEO Mark Gerhard hinted that certain personas were ‘100%’ compensated to speak negatively about MindsEye, believing a conspicuous effort was made to disparage it, targeting both Benzies and Build a Rocket Boy’s success. Although Benzies shows determination in addressing the game’s poor launch, the road ahead for MindsEye is unclear.
