A 2016 Renault Clio, while certainly not known for excitement, has been transformed by the UK-based cybersecurity group, Pen Test Partners, who have turned this otherwise mundane vehicle into a functional controller for games like Mario Kart. They achieved this impressive feat by intercepting the car’s CAN bus data—the same technology used to manage crucial components like steering and brakes.
“The splicers are cheap products that just cut away a tiny bit of insulation from the wires and allow a tap to be made…” — David Lodge.
Using simple wire splicers, they managed to connect to the Body Control Module (BCM) of the Clio by intercepting its CAN data. This venture raises interesting questions about the intersection of automotive technology and video gaming, showcasing how even the most casual vehicle can be adapted for entertainment.
Despite its new capabilities, it’s advised that drivers should refrain from using the vehicle in gaming mode on actual roads!
