Windows 11 Struggles to Gain Traction Among Steam Users as Windows 10 Support Ends
Despite Microsoft's efforts, Windows 11 has yet to convince a majority of Steam users to upgrade from Windows 10, sparking concerns about the future of its successor.
Over the past four years, Valve’s hardware surveys have consistently shown a reluctance among PC gamers to transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Despite its official launch in October 2021, Windows 11 did not surpass 60% in any Steam Hardware Survey until August 2024.
In the most recent survey, Windows 11 is reported to hold a 19% lead over Windows 10 (58% vs 37%), yet many users remain hesitant to make the switch. Users of pre-built systems or laptops often delay upgrades due to fear their older hardware won’t meet the requirements for Windows 11, such as UEFI BIOS and TPM 2.0.
The impending end of support for Windows 10 in October might prompt more users to transition to Windows 11, but the impact of past failures to attract users suggests a cautious approach from Steam gamers. Microsoft is likely to have to ensure that its next OS offers substantial improvements to avoid repeating the slow adoption seen with Windows 11.
