Classic Call of Duty Titles Receive Unexpected Server Update

Ten classic Call of Duty games are set for server maintenance, sparking community speculation about the purpose behind the update.

Ten classic Call of Duty games, including notable titles like Black Ops 2, World at War, and the original Modern Warfare 2, are scheduled for server maintenance on July 2 for an unspecified update. While newer titles routinely receive updates and hotfixes, older entries typically do not, leading to confusion within the gaming community.

Developers Treyarch Studios and Raven Software are currently focused on delivering Call of Duty’s major Season 4 Reloaded patch, expected to go live on July 2 across platforms including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Anticipation is high among fans for the mid-season update that promises new content, featuring the return of the classic Fringe map from Black Ops 3 and the introduction of Resurgence Casual mode in Call of Duty: Warzone.

Community Speculation Surrounding the Update

The unexpected maintenance has spurred rampant speculation among the community, with some users speculating on Twitter, including DANNYonPC, theorizing that the updates may pertain to bringing more Call of Duty titles to Xbox Game Pass. However, the inclusion of classics like World War 2 and Modern Warfare 3 (2023) on the platform raises doubts.

Others hypothesize that Activision may finally enhance the anti-cheat systems for older games such as the original Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops, which currently suffer from prolific cheating issues. As many old titles are virtually unplayable online due to rampant hacking, this update might bring some much-needed improvements.

Only time will reveal if this maintenance serves a significant purpose or is merely a background update with little impact on gameplay.
