The End of the Hexblade Era? Examining D&D 2024's Big Changes

A deep dive into how D&D's new 2024 rules may alter the Hexblade's status as the top multiclass option in Baldur's Gate 3.

The Hexblade has been considered the pinnacle of multiclassing options since its introduction to D&D in 2017. However, with the impending changes from D&D 2024, its stronghold may be challenged, particularly in Baldur’s Gate 3 where it was revealed in Patch 8.

With the new Unearthed Arcana rules released recently for playtesting, there are significant shifts aimed at reducing the Hexblade’s dominance. For those less familiar, the Hexblade is notorious for being a powerful multiclass dip, allowing players to combine various abilities seamlessly, thus providing an unmatched advantage in gameplay. One level in this Warlock subclass grants valuable benefits such as armor proficiency, the ability to use charisma for melee attacks, and access to powerful spells like Shield and Eldritch Blast.

However, future updates are set to adjust these advantages. 2024’s draft focuses on prolonging the perks of the Hexblade until later levels, potentially making this subclass less appealing. While this may level the playing field, traditional multiclass constructs may find this challenging as they try to adapt to the new rules.

As seen with multiclass bonuses dependent on charisma or constitution, a shift in how points are allocated could bring new synergies between classes. The community will watch closely as more updates are released, and feedback from playtests may steer the future of multiclassing once again.
