Chris Wilson, Path of Exile Innovator, Launches New Game Studio

Chris Wilson, the co-founder of Grinding Gear Games, announces the creation of his new game studio, Light Pattern, after stepping down from his previous role.

Over the weekend, Chris Wilson, who co-founded Grinding Gear Games—the studio behind Path of Exile—shocked the ARPG community with an unexpected announcement. In a recent interview with Diablo designer David Brevik celebrating Diablo 2’s 25th anniversary, Wilson disclosed his new venture into game development with a newly established studio, Light Pattern, and a game already in progress.

An official filing indicates that Wilson’s official capacity as a director at Grinding Gear Games ended in February 2025, though he claims he stepped down at the end of 2023 after leading the company for 17 years.

He mentioned, “After a year sorting my Magic cards and traveling, I felt the urge to create again without the CEO responsibilities of a large company.” In his time with Grinding Gear Games, especially after the launch of Path of Exile in 2013, Wilson became a well-known face for fans, often associated with significant reveals and updates.

Reflecting on the early days, Wilson noted that the most enjoyable moments came from collaborating creatively with his co-founders. To recapture that essence, he formed Light Pattern, described as a small, friendly team. Though specific project details remain undisclosed for now, a job posting for an Art Director hints at a direction influenced by Diablo II. Wilson’s deliberate unveiling of this studio aligns with the nostalgia of its roots.
