Denmark is set to enact a new law that will automatically grant individuals copyright over their own likeness, aiming to safeguard against the exploitation of AI technologies. The government declared this initiative to help prevent identity theft through AI impersonations.
“Human beings can be run through the digital copy machine and be misused for all sorts of purposes and I’m not willing to accept that,” stated Jakob Engel-Schmidt, the Culture Minister of Denmark.
This approach shifts the burden from AI developers to protect individual rights, ensuring that every person retains ownership of their bodily image, voice, and even likeness. Denmark’s legislation comes as a pioneering move within the EU, intending to set a precedent for other nations.
The Danish government hopes this law will lead to similar protective measures across the EU, emphasizing the importance of individual rights against advancing AI technologies.
