Tenna from Deltarune Imagined in 3D Years Ago

Toby Fox reflects on the early development of Tenna, a character from Deltarune, exploring its 3D origins and animated potential.

Tenna, the CRT-headed antagonist from Deltarune’s chapter 3, has been in development since 2016, as Toby Fox recently revealed. In a social media update, Fox shared his earlier aspirations to animate Tenna using an Xbox Kinect.

“About ‘Tenna.’ I invented this character a long time ago. In 2016, I bought a Kinect in order to rotoscope his movements, but I quickly abandoned this idea. I also wanted him to do MMD dances. Anyway, this is why I was ’learning 3D’ at the time.”

Fox noted that despite not pursuing the 3D animation direction himself, Tenna still made it into Deltarune’s 3D environment, thanks to a collaborative effort with fellow developers: Gigi, Clairevoire, Everdraed, SmallBu, and Audrey.

This replacement process reflects the nuances of indie game development, where one person may need to delegate significant tasks to ensure project completion.

Deltarune has garnered acclaim, recently soaring to the top of the Steam charts, with a staggering 98% approval rating based on over 45,000 reviews.
