Intel's Panther Lake Laptop Chips on Track, Desktop Complications Persist
Intel confirms that its Panther Lake laptop processors using new 18A silicon are on schedule for release, though the plans for Nova Lake desktop chips appear more complex.
Intel has provided an update on its future CPU offerings, confirming that the Panther Lake laptop chips utilizing its new 18A silicon technology are still expected to launch later this year. However, the situation regarding the upcoming Nova Lake desktop processors seems more complicated.
Recent earnings calls shed light on these developments, with interim co-CEO Michelle Holthaus stating, “Looking ahead to the rest of the year, we will strengthen our client roadmap with the launch of Panther Lake.”
Holthaus further noted that the production for the Nova Lake desktop CPUs might involve both Intel’s own 18A silicon and a possible partnership with TSMC, reflecting the company’s mixed strategy moving forward.
In the earnings call, CFO David Zinsner indicated that while EUV wafer revenue increased from 1% to over 5% in 2024, the transition to more advanced manufacturing processes has been slow for Intel.
Despite aiming to roll out Panther Lake chips by the year’s end, both management and market analysts remain cautious about the architecture’s readiness.
Overall, while Intel is pushing forward with its Panther Lake release, the integration of advanced processes and broader desktop adaptations continue to present challenges.
