In a celebration of its 20th anniversary, Google Earth has introduced a Historical Imagery feature that allows users to traverse back in time through different aerial images of various locations. This feature is accessible via a button on the interface, enabling exploration back to 1984.
The new tool showcases the remarkable advancement in photography over the decades. For example, images from 1984 often appear blurry compared to the detailed views available for 2025.
To view your favorite locations’ evolution, try the timelapse function, which compiles decades’ worth of imagery into a quick glimpse of progression over time. This is particularly fascinating when observing the transformation of entire cities.
While previously, obtaining historical imagery was possible through the standalone Google Earth application, this new feature simplifies the process significantly, offering a more user-friendly experience.
