Dutch Class Action Against Sony: Allegations of Monopoly Pricing Amid Digital-Only Trend

A lawsuit filed in the Netherlands accuses Sony of unfair pricing practices that have cost gamers significantly since 2013.

A class action lawsuit has been filed in the Netherlands against Sony, accusing the company of monopolistic pricing practices that have financially impacted gamers significantly since 2013. The lawsuit claims that players in the Netherlands have lost approximately 435 million euros due to “artificially high prices” on the PlayStation store, particularly affecting those who own the diskless PS5 consoles.

According to TechSpot, the case originated from the ‘Fair PlayStation’ campaign initiated by the Mass Damage & Consumer Foundation earlier this year, which quickly gained support from over 20,000 residents feeling exploited by Sony’s pricing strategies. The chair of the Foundation, Lucia Melcherts, asserted, “Many people are being compelled towards ‘digital-only’ consoles since the latest PS5 release, and studies show these digital versions cost about 47% more than their physical counterparts, even though distribution costs for Sony are lower.”

The hearing for this case is scheduled for later this year, coinciding with another class action suit Sony is facing in the UK that involves similar allegations of monopolistic practices.
