Sony Delivers Disappointing News for PlayStation Plus Subscribers

Sony confirms that first-party games will not be included in the PlayStation Plus subscription at launch, amid comparisons to Xbox Game Pass.

Subscribers of PlayStation Plus are likely to be disappointed as there will be no first-party games available at launch on the service, according to a recent statement by a company executive. With approximately 47 million subscribers in its multi-tiered system, there are concerns about its value compared to the Xbox Game Pass.

PlayStation Plus, launched in 2010, provides members access to a variety of games each month along with enhanced features like multiplayer access and exclusive discounts. The subscription will celebrate its 15th anniversary on June 29, 2025, which is expected to bring a wider range of games and discounts on Sony movies.

In an interview with Game File regarding the upcoming anniversary, Nick Maguire stated that Sony would continue its current strategy, indicating, “We’ve sort of stayed true to our strategy across the board, where we’re not looking to put games in day and date.”

PlayStation Plus Vs. Xbox Game Pass

This model contrasts sharply with Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, which releases first-party titles to subscribers on the same day as retail launch. In contrast, PlayStation Plus focuses on older games and independently produced titles, causing some to wonder about its competitiveness in the subscription market.

Conclusion

The PS Plus subscription service is divided into three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Recently, a notable growth of 18% in the Premium tier showcased the increasing demand for its offerings, hinting at positive trends in the subscription’s future.
