MindsEye's Troubling Launch Leads to Staff Layoffs at Former GTA Producer's Studio
The gaming studio Build A Rocket Boy is facing significant layoffs following the poor reception of their game MindsEye.
Build A Rocket Boy, the studio established by former GTA producer Leslie Benzies, has initiated a layoff process affecting over 100 employees following the disappointing release of their first game, MindsEye.
The launch of MindsEye has met with significant backlash, currently rated with almost 2,000 “mostly negative” reviews on Steam and a low Metacritic score of 38. Commenters are stating stark opinions like “Do not do it under any circumstances” to express their dissatisfaction.
Following the release, the studio has commenced a formal consultation process to address potential redundancies, a step mandated under UK law when an employer considers a wave of layoffs. With approximately 300 staff based in the UK, this may lead to a substantial workforce reduction.
Despite the issues, a representative from Build A Rocket Boy reassured that while they aim to reassign impacted team members, some layoffs are unavoidable. They emphasized a commitment to transparency and fairness throughout the process, with statements explaining this is not a decision made lightly.
Leslie Benzies, who had a crucial role in developing the Grand Theft Auto franchise, may have faced challenges with MindsEye due to high expectations based on his history, despite previous controversy surrounding his departure from Rockstar North in 2016.
A studio representative commented on the launch experience: “The significant setbacks we’ve faced will only strengthen our resolve, and even though we are saddened by the necessity of these changes, they permit us to focus on enhancing MindsEye, ensuring its long-term viability.”
As it stands, MindsEye currently has only 70 players on Steam, indicating a lukewarm reception from the gaming community.
