Major Endgame Changes Coming to Dune: Awakening

Funcom reveals significant updates aimed at enhancing the endgame experience in Dune: Awakening following player feedback.

Funcom, the developer behind the survival MMO Dune: Awakening, has introduced several forthcoming changes aimed at improving the high-level endgame, catering to player concerns about gameplay dynamics.

Dune: Awakening, launched in June 2025, has captivated audiences with its expansive desert gameplay featuring competitive PVP elements. This title has not only become Funcom’s fastest-selling game but also attracted a million players due to the hype from its combination of the Dune universe and thrilling survival mechanics reminiscent of Funcom’s earlier hit, Conan Exiles. Now, thousands of players are participating in exploration and intense competitions across the arid landscapes of Arrakis.

Despite its successful debut, the game has faced criticism, prompting Funcom to reassess player feedback. Joel Bylos, the Creative Director, has acknowledged issues with the PVP and overall experience in a Steam blog post, detailing plans for enhancements.

One significant update will introduce PVE (player-versus-environment) options in the endgame, allowing players to engage with the content without forcing PVP interactions. Currently, PVP plays a pivotal role solely in the Deep Desert, where obtaining rare resources requires player combat.

Bylos indicated that while the intent was for players to gather in guilds to tackle challenges, many feel excluded due to the competitiveness of PVP. To address this, certain areas within the Deep Desert will become flagged as ‘Partial Warfare (PVE)’ locations, granting access to resources while limiting unwanted combat. However, the more dangerous regions will still maintain a high combat risk setup for players seeking thrilling PVP encounters.

Additional adjustments will also be made to mitigate concerns over the prevalence of flying ornithopters, which currently dominate combat. Funcom aims for a balanced PVP experience that encourages diverse strategies rather than relying heavily on specific mechanics.

With these forthcoming changes, Funcom shows a commitment to responding to player feedback, potentially making Dune: Awakening an even more engaging experience.
