Gamer Constructs Custom 'Steam Controller 2' Using Steam Deck Components

An innovative gamer has developed his own version of the Steam Controller from the parts of a Steam Deck, introducing a unique split design akin to Nintendo's Joy-Cons.

TommyB, a passionate DIY enthusiast, took matters into his own hands when Valve delayed the release of a new Steam Controller. By utilizing various parts from the Steam Deck, he created a prototype he dubs the “Steam Controller 2” that even features a split design similar to Nintendo’s Joy-Cons.

Full Instructions and Accessibility

TommyB has made all his instructions, firmware, and components publicly available for those interested in crafting their own version.

The controller harnesses the Steam Deck’s controls and substitutes a traditional screen with custom 3D-printed connectors, showcasing both innovation and creativity without harming any actual Steam Deck units.

Unique Features

One standout feature is the bespoke trackpad designed specifically for the project, integrating a capacitive chip for a functional touch interface. According to TommyB, acquiring commercial trackpads was impractical due to compatibility concerns.

“I cannot buy trackpads for the Steam Deck, and even if I could, I don’t know how it would interact with them, I don’t know how they work,” TommyB explained.

For developers and gamers seeking to construct their own controllers, TommyB has even compiled the necessary firmware available on GitHub.

The resulting controller might appear unconventional, but it is operational—offering features that even pricier name-brand controllers can’t match.

Looking forward, TommyB envisions improvements to the controller’s ergonomics and design, and fans can stay updated by following his journey on his YouTube channel.
