Fans Revive a Long-Lost Chinese Borderlands MMO Despite Doubts

A group of dedicated fans is attempting to resurrect Borderlands Online, a previously canceled Chinese MMO, fueled by passion and nostalgia.

In 2014, Shanda Interactive Entertainment, a significant player in the Chinese gaming industry, initiated work on Borderlands Online, an MMO tailored exclusively for the Chinese audience. Despite these efforts, the game was shelved in 2015 as Shanda exited the game development sector altogether, leaving behind only memories and a handful of trailers and screenshots.

Recently, driven by sheer enthusiasm, a group of fans has unearthed an archaic build of the game from decrepit websites and are feverishly working to create a playable version of this abandoned title. Project leader EpicNNG shared their motivations, stating that despite recognizing the game’s potential lack of quality, they are determined to play it and hope the endeavor fosters community bonds ahead of the anticipated release of Borderlands 4 in September.

Reverse-engineering this title without its original servers or documentation poses a formidable challenge. EpicNNG remarked, “If you don’t know what you’re doing, it can feel like trying to escape a maze blindfolded.” They have made a heartfelt appeal for assistance through a YouTube video, emphasizing that this initiative is purely fan-driven and not for profit. The project aims to breathe life back into a fading piece of gaming history while welcoming media scrutiny and support.
