The co-creative director of Ghost of Yotei, Nate Fox, shared insights into how the developers from Sucker Punch Productions prepared to depict the game’s Ainu culture respectfully, which included an impactful visit to Japan. Ghost of Yotei is set to be released on October 2, 2025, and is a standalone sequel to the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima from 2020.
Fox elaborated on the cultural journey, explaining that the team worked closely with an Ainu cultural advisor and immersed themselves in the culture, even foraging for vegetables with her family. This experience influenced their design choices in the game, especially concerning foraging mechanics.
Despite acknowledging the challenges in portraying Ainu culture, the developers pursued thorough research, including visits to the Nibutani Ainu Museum, ensuring a mindful representation in their work. As anticipation builds for the game’s release, fans can expect a detailed State of Play presentation in July that will showcase gameplay features, combat mechanics, and vast landscapes to explore.
