Studio Camelia Shuts Down Just After a Year of Successful Crowdfunding
Studio Camelia has abruptly closed just one year after raising nearly $340,000 on Kickstarter for their JRPG, Alzara Radiant Echoes.
Studio Camelia, known for their Kickstarter-funded JRPG, Alzara Radiant Echoes, has announced their sudden closure. This comes just a year after successfully raising nearly $340,000, significantly exceeding their goal in June 2024.
Their Kickstarter campaign aimed to deliver a nostalgic homage to classic JRPGs, but recent updates indicated that the studio could not secure further financing to continue development. They cited the ongoing crisis within the video game industry, which has seen many studios close due to a lack of funding, and noted that over 20,000 jobs have been lost as investors become increasingly risk-averse.
Despite the strong show of support from backers, who demonstrated interest in the project, the studio struggled to find an industrial partner to secure the remaining funds needed for development. Plans to showcase their new demo did not lead to any successful deals, and on April 28, Studio Camelia was formally liquidated, placing Alzara Radiant Echoes on “indefinite pause.”
According to the developers, there is a chance that a third party might take over the project, but they warned that such a move would drastically change the game’s direction compared to what was presented during the campaign. Unfortunately, backers will not receive any refunds, as the funds raised were not sufficient to cover those costs. The future of Alzara remains uncertain as complaints from backers indicate dissatisfaction with how the funds were used.
