The Lost Code of Final Fantasy Tactics Delayed Its Rerelease

The journey to bring back Final Fantasy Tactics has been a challenging one due to the loss of its original source code.

Final Fantasy Tactics is set to return with a remastered version later this year. The director, Kazutoyo Maehiro, explained the severe challenges faced during its development, particularly due to the missing source code, which was typical for the time as original data was often overwritten during localization processes.

“We had to rebuild Final Fantasy Tactics from the ground up, which included analyzing existing versions to reconstruct its programming,” Maehiro stated. “We relied on our memories and gameplay feel at times to make it correct.”

The remake will feature enhancements such as a new user interface, full voice acting, new dialogues written by Yasumi Matsuno, and the addition of an autosave feature and adjustable battle speeds. Fans can also choose to play a classic mode to experience the game in its original graphics style. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is set for release on September 30 via Steam.
