Olympic Esports Games Could Be Postponed to 2027
The International Olympic Committee discusses the delay of the inaugural Olympic Esports Games originally set for 2025.
The IOC is working to make the Olympic Esports Games a monumental event; however, the timeframe for the first edition may be too ambitious, with a possible delay to 2027.
The event was announced in 2024, in partnership with the International Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Committee of Saudi Arabia, intending to hold events over a span of 12 years starting in 2025. Reports suggest the timeline was overly optimistic, with organizers needing additional time to develop a suitable hosting and financing model, and concerns from game publishers regarding the tight schedule.
As of now, dates, venues, and qualifying processes for the event remain unannounced. The IOC affirmed that they are still on track to establish the essential components of the inaugural event but did not confirm the delay.
Quotes from the IOC:
“Organizing the Olympic Games of esports is as crucial as creating a roadmap for the event, which will require raising awareness and engaging participants. Discussions within the Joint Committee continue, aiming to make this event historic for both esports and the Olympic Movement.”
