Motoi Okamoto Talks About the Evolution of Japanese Horror in Silent Hill

The producer of the Silent Hill series reflects on the series' evolution and its focus on Japanese horror as it prepares for the release of Silent Hill F.

While it was exciting news that Bloober Team is working on a remake of the original Silent Hill, another highlight was the behind-the-scenes look at Silent Hill F, which is set in Showa-era Japan. This installment promises to transport players to Ebisugaoka, moving far beyond the traditional setting. Motoi Okamoto, the series producer, stated, “Silent Hill was a series that fused the essence of Western and Japanese horror, but I found that as it progressed, the essence of Japanese horror was lost. I felt compelled to create a version that embodies pure Japanese-style horror.”

In his vision for the new game, Okamoto emphasized the importance of intertwining beauty and horror: “The hallmark of Japanese horror is the unique blend of the beautiful and the eerie, which our team is striving to encapsulate in this title.” Al Yang, game director at Neobards, echoed this sentiment, revealing that the team aimed to craft visuals that are both oddly appealing and deeply disturbing, inspired by the artist Kera.

Given the mixed reception of international adaptations of Silent Hill, a return to a strictly Japanese approach could herald a revitalizing chapter for the franchise.
