Rainbow Six: Siege X Launches Today as a Free-to-Play Title

Ubisoft transitions one of the best tactical shooters into a free-to-play format with Rainbow Six: Siege X.

Ubisoft’s flagship tactical shooter, Rainbow Six: Siege, has transformed into Rainbow Six: Siege X, now adopting a free-to-play business model. The new edition keeps the core tactical gameplay intact while allowing players easier access.

While Ubisoft prefers to use the term “free to access”, the overhaul comes as a significant update and will enable new and existing players to explore a much larger gameplay environment.

Originating from historical events like the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege, Siege has maintained its reputation as one of the most compelling and strategic shooters available. The game introduces a new gameplay mode named “dual front,” showcasing larger map layouts and unique strategic elements.

Ubisoft stresses that while this change may allow more players to experience Siege, the competitive edge won’t diminish, assuring that ranked gameplay will still require a purchase commitment to ensure a balanced gaming environment.

For those eager to dive in, the base version includes numerous game modes and operator selections that will refresh periodically. Players who wish to engage in competitive scenarios need to purchase the Elite Edition, priced at approximately £17.99 / $20, providing full access to the operators and additional features.

“Having that barrier to Ranked or Siege Cup means you have to be committed to the game. It does mean we weed out smurfs, and it means we’re prepared to continue supporting the most competitive aspect of the game,” stated Alex Karpazis, the game’s current director.

Overall, Siege X aims to deliver not just excitement for new players, but also a sustained challenge for veterans who wish to further their tactical expertise.
