Resident Evil Requiem surprised audiences during this year’s Summer Game Fest by returning to Raccoon City after its devastation. This edition introduces Grace Ashcroft, a character descended from one featured in the 2003 game Resident Evil Outbreak.
One of the standout features is the ability to toggle between first-person and third-person views anytime, a newly introduced aspect for the franchise. However, this transition isn’t smooth, as it requires pausing the game, suggesting advice against frequent perspective changes. Similar to Resident Evil Village’s third-person mode, this option caters to players who prefer seeing their characters onscreen.
The toggle seems to bridge the existing division among fans, especially as the first-person format gained popularity with RE7 and Village. While the legacy camera angles from reboots of RE2 and RE4 have shown significant appeal, incorporating both elements into Requiem raises questions about maintaining the tension and aesthetics distinctive to first-person horror gameplay.
Despite player concerns, Capcom’s successful preview in first-person mode leads to speculation about Nakanishi’s preferences in camera perspective. The official release date for Resident Evil Requiem is February 27, 2026.
