Dying Light: The Beast Director Reflects on Player Demands for Firearms

The director of Dying Light: The Beast explains the decision to include guns in the latest installment, emphasizing player feedback.

In a major shift for the Dying Light series, the director, Tymon Smektala, stated, “Let’s give the players the guns if they want.” This change comes after a long-standing perception that melee weapons were more fitting for the post-apocalyptic environment where survival is paramount. Traditionally, Dying Light 2 shunned firearms to enhance the challenge of survival, reflecting a world where munitions are scarce. However, player feedback has prompted the team at Techland to reassess this approach for the upcoming installment.

Smektala further emphasized the team’s commitment: “We’re focused on ensuring that the firearms feel as impactful and balanced as melee combat, preventing them from feeling overpowering.” Even though firearms will be integrated, the director acknowledges the nuanced relationship between guns and gameplay mechanics, stating, “If Dying Light and guns were on Facebook, their relationship status would be, ‘it’s complicated.’”

Thus, the upcoming Dying Light: The Beast aims for a blend of both worlds, appealing to fans who crave the tactile satisfaction of guns while retaining the gritty essence that defined its predecessors.
