2025 is shaping up to be a milestone year for Obsidian Entertainment. Having launched the popular first-person fantasy RPG Avowed earlier in February, and with Grounded 2 set for release in July, excitement builds for the impending launch of The Outer Worlds 2 in October.
Unlike what many might expect, the studio is confident that this crowded release schedule won’t lead to reduced sales for its titles. In a recent interview at Summer Game Fest 2025, Game Director Brandon Adler expressed that internal discussions have produced a positive attitude among the team.
Adler noted the initial concern when both large RPGs were slated for the same year: “Yes, we discussed it at some length—having two major RPGs come out simultaneously raises questions about market perception.”
However, he considers the timing of the releases a fortuitous decision. “We discovered the shipping dates before others, allowing us to polish Avowed significantly. More is better—it’s the year of Obsidian!” he exclaimed.
Interestingly, Adler commented on whether the launch timing of The Outer Worlds 2 was intentional, ultimately maintaining the stance that, while not wholly coincidental, the studio’s rich experience allows them the flexibility to carve their path amid high-stakes competition.
Expect The Outer Worlds 2 to hit the shelves on October 29.
