Trump's Tariff Threat: A Potential Price Surge for Nvidia's RTX 5090

Trump's proposition to impose up to 100% tariffs on chips from Taiwan could significantly raise prices for advanced graphics cards like the RTX 5090.

When considering the price of Nvidia’s RTX 5090 graphics card, which sits at around $2,000, projections suggest that costs might soon escalate significantly due to potential tariffs. Speaking at a conference in Miami, Trump indicated he may impose up to 100% tariffs on chips made in Taiwan.

“In the very near future, we’re going to be placing tariffs on foreign production of computer chips, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals to return production of these essential goods to the United States of America,” Trump said.
「不久的未来,我们将对外国生产的计算机芯片、半导体和药品征收关税,以将这些重要商品的生产带回美国。」

Trump highlights Taiwan’s TSMC as a critical player, stating they manufacture many advanced chips for Nvidia’s graphics production. His reasoning centers on pressuring companies like Nvidia and AMD to produce stateside.

“They needed an incentive. And the incentive is gonna be they’re not gonna wanna pay a 25, 50 or even a 100% tax,” Trump said.
「他们需要一个激励。这个激励是,他们不想支付 25%、50% 或甚至 100% 的税。」

He notes Taiwan conducts about 98% of chip business, laying the groundwork for potential backlash if such tariffs are enacted. The timeline for establishing new manufacturing sites is lengthy, posing challenges in producing chips at competitive yields swiftly enough.

Trump’s call for tariffs could notably impact costs for US consumers, should the measures take effect. A flat 25% tariff may drastically elevate the market price of computer components.

In a separate note, Trump reiterated his commitment to reversing inflation swiftly:

“When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on day one.”
「当我赢的时候,我会立刻降低价格,从第一天开始。」
