In the game Dune: Awakening, riding sandworms isn’t an official gameplay feature, but some daring players are making it happen. Notably, a player named SgtDolphin showcased a stunning clip where they expertly lure the giant sandworm, known as Shai-Hulud, and jump onto its back. Although Funcom, the developer, initially explored the idea of allowing sandworm riding, they ultimately deemed it too complex for launch.
“Sandworm riding needs a purpose,” explained Joel Bylos, the game’s creative director.
“In the movies, sandworms are ridden through the otherwise impassable southern sandstorms and used to attack Arrakeen. You don’t do either of those things in Dune: Awakening, at least not yet.”
Even without this feature, players like SgtDolphin are finding creative ways to engage with the game’s environment. To achieve this, they utilize a combination of special abilities and tools. For instance, the Bindu Sprint ability allows players to dash at high speeds, while suspensor gear enables dynamic movement across the sand.
It’s clear that while some features remain out of reach, the Dune: Awakening community continues to innovate and redefine the experience. For more impressive gameplay, check out another member’s video of the ride, showcasing the fun and excitement of this unofficial mechanic.
