Fungus becomes enemy number one in July.
I’ve expressed my thoughts on Mycopunk ahead of its launch. This game offers co-op FPS action at its finest: it’s fast, engaging, and slightly absurd, steering clear of the roguelike trend. A demo is now available, so grab some friends for a playthrough.
Mark July 10 on your calendar, as the release date was revealed at the PC Gaming Show 2025. This release is earlier than expected but still far enough away to keep anticipation high.
In Mycopunk, players operate as a team of “overpowered and underpaid” scrap bots tasked with eliminating a planet’s invasive fungus issues. Each bot has unique movement skills—one can glide temporarily—but all can use shared equipment like guns and grenades. I envision Mycopunk as the surface escapade while Deep Rock Galactic’s dwarves handle the depths below.
The game’s antagonists are the collective hive mind of the invasive fungi, eager to eliminate our heroes, sending blobs of mutated mass armed with remnants of society’s failure. Players can disassemble tentacled foes limb by limb or target their armored cores, making for strategic gameplay similar to Horizon’s robotic dinosaurs.
Between missions, players can exchange materials collected for upgrades that meaningfully affect gameplay. Modification slots on guns require thoughtful arrangement, reminiscent of puzzles found in Resident Evil 4, with larger upgrades taking more space, like a DMR modifier capable of turning its magazine into a throwable grenade.
The demo demonstrated Mycopunk’s gun mechanics, but I’m eager to see how the game evolves by July. The newly released trailer offers teasers of unique mission types not available in the demo, including one featuring vehicles—which I’m particularly looking forward to.
