Summary

  • Xbox collaborates with Asus for a new handheld gaming system.
  • ROG Xbox Ally will have two versions with distinct specifications.
  • The console targets release during the holiday season of 2025.

Xbox has officially disclosed plans for a handheld gaming console, created in conjunction with Asus. There have been rumors for years regarding Microsoft’s initiative to produce a portable device to rival the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck. This was eventually validated by Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer in late 2024.

Since the announcement, speculation has surrounded the features of this Xbox handheld gaming console and its compatibility with Xbox’s mission of expanding beyond traditional home consoles. Reports from March suggested that the new device would function similarly to a PC in terms of hardware and utilize a look inspired by Windows, indicating collaboration with an unnamed tech partner—later identified as Asus, known for its ROG Ally handheld.

Details of the Xbox Ally Handheld Console

The new handheld device, named the ROG Xbox Ally, will be launched in two versions for gamers seeking different specifications:

  1. ROG Xbox Ally X
    • AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor
    • 24 GB RAM
    • 1TB storage
  2. ROG Xbox Ally
    • AMD Ryzen X2A processor
    • 16 GB RAM
    • 512 GB storage

Xbox President Sarah Bond elaborated on the features of the ROG Xbox Ally, describing it as “an Xbox console you can hold in your hands.” She indicated that the console would support games from Xbox libraries and Xbox Game Pass, as well as titles from Steam, GOG, and Ubisoft Connect. Additionally, it’s confirmed that the eagerly awaited Hollow Knight: Silksong will be available at launch along with its inclusion in Game Pass when the console releases late this year.

Conclusion

The upcoming Xbox consoles aim to enhance gaming accessibility for users across various platforms. With planned launches in late 2025, the ROG Xbox Ally reaffirms Xbox’s commitment to broadening its gaming influence.
