Johan Pilestedt's Sabbatical: A New Chapter After 11 Years on Helldivers 2

After over a decade of dedication to Helldivers 2, creative director Johan Pilestedt announces a much-needed break and hints at future endeavors.

Arrowhead’s chief creative officer, Johan Pilestedt, is taking a significant hiatus from his work on Helldivers 2 after pouring 11 years of tireless effort into the franchise. Asserting the need for personal time, he announced, “I am going to take some time now to redeem what was lost from all of those that supported me for over a decade.”

While Pilestedt emphasizes his commitment to the game’s development, he acknowledges the impact of his intense dedication on his relationships, including with family and friends. “11 years of working ‘around the clock’ on the same IP has made me set aside family, friends and my lovely wife… and myself,” he stated.

Initially launched in 2013, the Helldivers series has seen vast evolution, transforming from a top-down shooter to a grand third-person experience. With Pilestedt’s sabbatical, he leaves the ongoing management of Helldivers 2 to his colleagues at Arrowhead, ensuring that quality and engagement will continue in his absence.

Upon returning, Johan plans to pivot towards new projects within Arrowhead Game Studios, saying “When I’m back, I will start working on the next Arrowhead game.” His first agenda during this break? Participating in a game jam with his fellow developers.
