During the PlayStation State of Play event held on June 4, developer ArtPlay announced the action RPG titled Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement. This eagerly awaited sequel to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will continue the revered 2.5D Metroidvania action. Unlike its predecessor, this new installment presents a different setting and introduces two new protagonists.
Recognized as a spiritual successor to the classic Castlevania series, Bloodstained games immerse players in rich gothic environments filled with unique creatures, magical elements, and stunning architecture. The series has released three titles thus far: Ritual of the Night, its retro-styled companion Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, and its 2020 follow-up. Following the success of Ritual of the Night, fans have eagerly anticipated a sequel and ArtPlay is set to deliver.
The trailer revealed during the June event showcases updated graphics for The Scarlet Engagement, which retains similarities to Ritual of the Night while introducing notable changes in character and enemy designs with a new cel shaded effect. Additionally, cutscenes will utilize fully rendered 3D graphics with voiceovers instead of box-style dialogues.
A significant gameplay feature is the introduction of a new buddy system. Players will manage both characters, Leonard and Alexander, simultaneously—one directly under control while the other provides support. This gameplay mechanic aims to enhance strategy in navigating the largest map ever created in the series.
As players traverse the expansive Ethereal Castle, they will uncover relics, weapons, and customization options to enhance Leonard and Alexander’s appearances, craft items, and upgrade skills akin to the original Ritual of the Night mechanics. The two heroes will also learn new combat moves that are crucial for overcoming the powerful Demon Lord Elias.
