Apple is Reportedly Working on Its Own Game Launcher Similar to Steam

Apple is developing its own game launcher, inspired by Valve's Steam, but it needs to enhance compatibility for Mac gaming.

Apple is in the process of creating its own video game launcher, which is reportedly intended to function similarly to Steam. This new app aims to centralize game access, achievements, and leaderboards.

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, this launcher will primarily showcase titles available on the App Store and from Apple Arcade, but it may also allow connectivity to games downloaded from platforms like Steam or Epic Games. While such a centralized launcher could enhance the gaming experience on Apple devices, it does not solve the deeper issue of game compatibility on macOS.

Currently, many gamers prefer PC or console alternatives due to the limited gaming options on Mac. A dedicated launcher could help organize gaming on Macs and iPhones but falls short in addressing compatibility issues that deter developers from supporting macOS with their titles.

It has been noted that while gaming capabilities on Macs have improved, the library remains sparse, hindering the potential user base.

With this new initiative, Apple might aim to inspire developers by creating a compatibility layer akin to Valve’s Proton, ultimately paving the way for a more extensive gaming community on Mac.
