Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players have a surprise new Mass Outbreak event to participate in, as The Pokemon Company confirmed that waves of Porygon will appear throughout Paldea, Kitakami, and the Terarium for a limited time. This three-day event in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is a commemoration of the Switch 2’s launch on June 5.
Known as the Virtual Pokemon, Porygon first appeared in Pokemon Red and Blue as a prize that players could earn at Celadon City’s notorious Game Corner. Porygon received two additional evolution forms in subsequent generations, with Porygon2 appearing in Pokemon Gold and Silver, and Porygon-Z debuting years later in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Porygon’s cyan and magenta body and polygonal appearance have made it a fan favorite over the years, with tributes to match its popularity. One such example was a line of fan-crafted Nintendo console holders themed around Porygon and its evolutionary forms.
Although Porygon and its later forms can usually be found in The Terarium, a new Mass Outbreak offers players more opportunities to catch the Virtual Pokemon. According to Serebii.net, the ongoing Porygon Mass Outbreak concludes on Wednesday, June 4, at 7:59 PM Eastern. Waves of Porygon will appear in not just The Terarium, but in Kitakami and Paldea as well. Ergo, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players who do not have access to The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC can participate in the Mass Outbreak after receiving a Poke Portal News update via the Internet. The Porygon Mass Outbreak will end just a few hours before the launch of the Switch 2.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Porygon Mass Outbreak Details (June 2025)
The Virtual Pokemon was chosen as the focus of this new event due to its body colors being similar to those of the Joy-Con controllers on the original Switch and the Switch 2. Along with other titles like Super Mario Odyssey, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will receive a free Switch 2 upgrade patch starting June 5 that takes advantage of the new console’s capabilities. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will have optimized visuals and frame rates on the new system, though it remains to be seen how differently the games will perform on Nintendo’s new console.
Similar to past events, any Porygon that is encountered in a Mass Outbreak wave in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will have boosted Shiny odds. Given that Porygon is a Normal-type Pokemon, trainers can improve their odds via Shiny Sandwich recipes that include Tofu along with Salty and Sour Herba Mystica as the main ingredients.
