In designing Elden Ring: Nightreign, artist Saori Mizuno aimed to create a welcoming, cozy atmosphere. Drawing inspiration from the beloved Dark Souls, she focused on crafting locations that initially feel comfortable but gradually reveal a more unsettling ambiance.
Creating an Engaging World
The goal was to maintain a familiar aesthetic for players while introducing elements that evolve into something unfamiliar. “We didn’t want to make it feel too different from Elden Ring, as it used that as a base for the design and the setting,” Mizuno explained.
Thematic Inspirations
Reflecting on her influences, Mizuno mentioned the Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away, stating, “This feeling of being unable to go home, unable to escape from a dream, is something I wanted to harness while designing these worlds.”
Cozy Design Elements
For the hub area, Mizuno referenced the Firelink Shrine from Dark Souls, emphasizing the need for it to feel inviting: “We wanted it to feel, from a design perspective, more cozy, more welcoming, more at home.”
With these thoughtful design choices, Nightreign promises not just challenge but an intricate world that entices players to explore its depth.
