The Swapper, a unique sci-fi puzzle game known for its engaging gameplay and thought-provoking narrative, has now received its first major update since 2014. This comes as great news for fans as the game has been updated to enhance both its visuals and functionality, making it officially compatible with the Steam Deck.
Originally launched in 2013, The Swapper allows players to create clones of themselves to solve intricate puzzles while exploring themes of identity and personal consciousness. According to Facepalm Games, the developer, the latest update focuses on correcting long-standing issues while also integrating visual enhancements such as updated textures, improved audio panning, and more responsive controls. Developers noted, “We couldn’t resist including some visual, aural, and input adjustments that make the game feel a bit smoother.” This update ensures The Swapper remains visually appealing and technically sound even in modern hardware environments.
For players who prefer the classic look of the game, Facepalm has also introduced a legacy branch on Steam that retains the game’s original aesthetics while incorporating necessary stability fixes, allowing players a choice in how they experience The Swapper.
Fans of The Swapper are excited to see how its director Olli Harjola and writer Tom Jubert continue their creative journeys—Harjola having gone on to create the cult hit Noita, while Jubert has been involved in significant game narratives like The Talos Principle.
