NetherRealm Announces End of Major Updates for Mortal Kombat 1

The studio shifts focus to its next project after less than two years post-launch support for Mortal Kombat 1.

In the landscape of fighting games, NetherRealm has announced that it will stop releasing major updates for Mortal Kombat 1 less than two years after its launch, opting instead to redirect its focus towards the next project.

While the game will still receive balance adjustments and bug fixes, additional downloadable content (DLC) including characters or story chapters will not be produced any longer. The studio mentioned this change in a discussion on X, stating: “while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.”

A representative remarked that this decision is disappointing for fans, but is deemed essential to ensure that the next installment is executed to the highest standards possible.

This announcement comes shortly after creative director Ed Boon had mentioned on X that MK1 was meant to receive more post-launch support than any prior titles in the Mortal Kombat series. In contrast to Mortal Kombat 11, which concluded its support after more than two years, the current update situation presents itself about a year and a half post-launch of MK1 in September 2023.

Despite various pop culture crossovers making the game feel distinctive, reviews have pointed out an absence of excitement that might make it memorable in the long run. Critics have noted the potential for more enjoyable experiences in future entries, whether in the form of Injustice 3 or another Mortal Kombat title.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, or seize the chance to play MK1 while it still has an active player community. You can find the game available on Steam.
