As part of a new FPS Fridays series on Twitch, legendary shooter designer John Romero streamed Dusk, a 2018 hit that has influenced the indie shooter genre. The result? Romero appeared to thoroughly enjoy the game.
Romero quickly adapted to its gameplay mechanics, showcasing skill unmatched by many players. He commented positively on the sound design by Szymanski and praised the foreboding soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult. He was especially impressed by the intricate details and physics in Dusk, demonstrated by how he interacted with in-game objects.
In his stream, he expressed enthusiasm for the game, stating, “This game was super-cool, love it. The ambience is amazing, the design is super-fun, lots of secrets, tons of classic design here. If you don’t have Dusk, you should get it.”
Romero’s reflections prompted excitement from the team at New Blood, with Dave Oshry mentioning Romero’s notable gameplay moments, such as his use of the “BIG FUCKIN SOAP” item, translating their excitement into social media shares and clips.
You can watch the full stream and keep up with FPS Fridays on Romero’s Twitch channel. His choice of game for future streams will be based on viewer votes. Previous nostalgia included revisiting the acclaimed Doom WAD MyHouse after its first showcase in 2023.
