'We'll Call You Back': BioWare's Initial Impression of The Witcher 1 Was Far From Stellar

In a candid reflection, CD Projekt Red's co-CEO shares how their first encounter with BioWare resulted in self-doubt but ultimately led to support and growth.

When approaching a big presentation, the feeling of being underprepared can be daunting. In a revealing moment from CD Projekt Red’s journey, co-CEO Adam Badowski recalls a time when he and his team showcased a demo of The Witcher 1 to BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk.

The demo fell flat, leading to a realizable moment of discomfort for the CDPR team. Badowski expressed that after the presentation, the BioWare founders asked, “So what do you aim to achieve?” to which they boldly stated their ambition to become the industry’s leading RPG developers and create the best game ever.

Despite the rocky introduction, BioWare eventually reached out and provided substantial support to CD Projekt Red, helping them acquire their first game engine. This encounter became a crucial stepping stone for the developers back then, showcasing that initial setbacks can lead to significant opportunities.
