Remedy's Mike Kayatta emphasizes player respect in FBC: Firebreak development

Remedy's Director shares insights on prioritizing player investment in their upcoming title, FBC: Firebreak.

Remedy Entertainment’s Director, Mike Kayatta, recently spoke about their upcoming project, FBC: Firebreak, underscoring their commitment to valuing the time of players rather than leveraging the fear of missing out (FOMO).

“This idea of a responsible team size, a responsible budget, a responsible amount of time to develop a game, just get it out there, make something that respects player time and don’t try to overcharge and don’t try to be greedy with time,” Kayatta expressed in an interview with IGN.

Kayatta further criticized the trend of massively rising game development costs, illustrating that some titles now cost up to half a billion dollars to create. Yet he acknowledged the unique experiences these high-budget games can provide, indicating that not every game can compete in this market.

The initiative to respect player time and avoid unnecessary monetization tactics reflects a shift in industry norms, which are often dominated by aggressive marketing strategies. Kayatta’s remarks highlight a vision for a gaming future where enjoyable experiences are prioritized over potential profit.
