Former Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider candidly shared his thoughts on the recent success of ‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33,’ comparing it to ‘Baldur’s Gate 3,’ which he referred to as a prime example of what is achievable when developers are given adequate time to refine their creations.
Truly exceptional games, according to Gaider, not only attract their initial audiences but also widen their reach. He stated that both titles serve as heartfelt tributes to their genres and succeed in appealing to a more extensive player base than typically seen.
“The sales for Baldur’s Gate 3 were amazing, and kind of refute the popular belief that the RPG audience is capped at a certain number. Clearly, a well-made game can surpass expectations,” Gaider remarked.
He noted the contradiction between the perception of gaming audiences and the success of high-quality games that defy these assumptions. While acknowledging that many good games may fall short of sales targets due to oversaturation in the market, he emphasized that titles like ‘Clair Obscur’ and ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ showcase the possibilities that emerge when games are carefully developed.
He concluded by stating, “I think both games illustrate the potential of crafting titles that resonate deeply with players, ultimately expanding the audience instead of confining it. This is what ‘Expedition 33’ truly accomplishes by blending established JRPG elements into an accessible and appealing format.”
