The upcoming sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 has been generating buzz since its announcement a few years ago during an investor presentation. However, it was only recently that creator Mike Pondsmith shed light on its development during an interview at the Digital Dragons event.
In a conversation with tvgry, Pondsmith remarked on one of the new environments in the game: “It doesn’t feel like Blade Runner; it feels more like Chicago gone wrong.” This description paints an intriguing picture of a more industrial, chaotic setting compared to the polished and vibrant Night City of the first game.
While the comparison might sound odd at first, it aligns with a vision of a gritty urban space filled with railroads and cold industrial landscapes. Pondsmith indicates that he believes this new locale will resonate well with fans looking for a shift from the traditional cyberpunk aesthetic. He states, “I can see this working.”
Pondsmith expressed his fondness for Blade Runner, calling it his favorite movie, but emphasized the need for diversity in the genre, suggesting that “Cyberpunk isn’t just Blade Runner.” He appreciates how CD Projekt has redefined what the genre can encompass.
As development progresses, Pondsmith is taking a more supervisory role, allowing his designer to engage closely with CD Projekt, enabling him to focus on other creative aspects.
