Doom: The Dark Ages Unveils Retro Gameplay Inspired by Classic Roots

Creative Director Hugo Martin discusses gameplay changes in the upcoming Doom game, emphasizing a return to its classic roots.

In a recent Q&A session before the Xbox developer showcase, Hugo Martin, creative director at id Software, and Marty Stratton, executive producer, revealed details about gameplay modifications in Doom: The Dark Ages, emphasizing a nostalgic back-to-basics approach inspired by the original games of the 1990s.

“I think I spent more time playing classic Doom on this project than I did in any other one.”

Martin expressed that the team responded to feedback about Doom Eternal, reflecting on criticisms regarding its complexity and difficulty:

“Some people said Doom Eternal was too hard. I actually think it’s too complex. You really want to be fighting the demons, the bad guys, not your controls.”

While the aim isn’t to make the game easier, Martin hopes to provide a more accessible experience, aiming for an intuitive control scheme that allows players to react without fumbling with unfamiliar buttons during critical moments.

Exploration and Gameplay

The new game intends to blend modern gaming conveniences with retro level design elements, with a goal to avoid moments of frustration while exploring. They will address previous challenges faced by players, such as navigation issues, citing that it shouldn’t require dedication to find critical pathways hidden in texture.

Doom: The Dark Ages is scheduled for release on May 15, 2025, and it promises to keep players engaged with its dynamic combat, continuing the legacy of classic gameplay.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to further updates and announcements leading up to the release.
