Director Carrie Patel Departs Obsidian to Lead Netflix Studio

Carrie Patel leaves Obsidian Entertainment after 12 years to assume the role of Game Director at Night School, the studio behind 'Oxenfree'.

After a successful tenure of almost 12 years at Obsidian Entertainment, Carrie Patel, the game director of Avowed, is moving to Night School, the Netflix-owned company behind the acclaimed Oxenfree games.

Patel recently shared the news of her transition in a succinct LinkedIn post, stating, “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Game Director at Night School: A Netflix Game Studio!”

Founded in 2014, Night School gained recognition for its standout inaugural release, the supernatural adventure Oxenfree. Netflix’s acquisition of Night School in 2021 marked a significant milestone as it was the platform’s first studio purchase, signaling its ambition to step into the gaming sector.

However, Netflix’s gaming strategy seems to have diminished in recent years, as evidenced by a studio closure in 2024 and leadership changes within its gaming division. Despite these challenges, Patel’s extensive experience at Obsidian, where she was pivotal in crafting narratives for Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds, positions her well for her new role. The reasons behind her transition to a smaller team remain speculative at this point, with no further comments from Patel or Netflix on her future contributions at Night School.
